The Use of Information Technologies by Belarusian Business

This is the first of a series of works devoted to factors, barriers and the effect of information technology (hereinafter - IT) implementation by Belarusian small and medium enterprises (hereinafter - SMEs) on the basis of a survey performed among 424 entities.

The study found that in terms of automation, industrial enterprises are left behind by financial and computer services companies as well as restaurant business. Mostly Belarusian business is expected to automate accounting and personnel records, and among the most promising information systems CRM systems are noted. Over half of the companies admitted that they use IT products of Belarusian developers and two-thirds of respondents use software maintenance and integration services from Belarusian providers.

Compared to EU countries, Belarusian business uses solutions more actively in the field of web technologies, but less often implements expensive corporate systems and instruments. The lack of financial resources, the small scale of operations and the lack of qualified personnel are named as main barriers of using IT.
