Circular Economy in Belarusian Agriculture
The paper presents results of the survey of agricultural producers on waste management and factors affecting a reuse of their waste. Three main conclusions emerge from the survey data are as follows: first, agricultural business entities in Belarus are re-applied primarily livestock and bioenergy drains, agricultural residues and plant residues, industrial waste products (scrap, metals, paper and cardboard, glass, tires, construction materials waste and etc.), waste from food processing enterprises (beet sugar, oil extraction, starch, alcohol, brewing, flour and cereal, etc.). Second, the main barriers to greater involvement of waste in agricultural production are the lack of technology for processing large volumes of livestock and bioenergy waste, as well as plant residues; the economic infeasibility of waste reuse; the lack of resources for utilization of own waste; and lack of modern food processing technologies for the manufacture of products from recycled materials as well as low demand for such products. Third, there is a difference in scoring of the barriers between agricultural organizations and farms, and later display a greater interest in optimizing resources by circulating materials.
This publication targets a broad audience and is the ninth in a series of papers on circular economy in Belarus prepared under the Development Project of the Economic Research and Outreach Center (BEROC) supported by SIDA.
