Attitudes of the Belarusians towards the pension system

This paper presents an analysis of the main findings of a survey of the attitudes of the Belarusians towards the existing pension system and possible reforms. The results show that in general, upcoming retirement evokes negative emotions in the population since public pension is not able to ensure decent old age, according to respondents. The participants of the survey believe that the reason for this is the level of economic development. This means that the population does not see the reform of the existing pension system as a solution to the situation. The issue of the greatest interest for the population is the insurance period accounting since most of the respondents risk not to have worked it out by the age of retirement.

This work is part of a study of the attitudes of the Belarusians to the social protection system, which is conducted by the IPM Research Center together with BEROC.
