Reshaping the Belarusian Economy through European Integration

Belarus’s EU Integration: Economic Perspectives

The project explored the economic implications of Belarus’s potential future integration into the European Union and developed analytical tools for assessing different integration scenarios.

The research focused on the economic transformations associated with closer integration with the EU, their potential effects on the Belarusian economy during the transition process, and the longer-term opportunities that European integration could create for Belarus.

Research and Analytical Tools

A major outcome of the project was the development of a country-specific Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) model for Belarus and its integration with other macroeconomic modelling approaches.

The model provides a tool for assessing how different integration and policy scenarios could affect the Belarusian economy. Its development also represents an important methodological contribution, as this type of modelling had not previously been applied in the Belarusian context.

The project combined this modelling work with broader economic research on Belarus’s potential integration with the EU. The results were presented in working papers, policy reports, and a monograph, creating an analytical foundation for further research and policy discussion.

Long-Term Value

The analytical tools and research developed through the project provide a foundation for further work on the economic dimensions of Belarus’s European integration.

In particular, the CGE model can be used and further developed to assess future integration scenarios, policy choices, and their potential implications for different sectors of the Belarusian economy. The project also strengthened research links between Belarusian economists and the broader European academic and policy community.
