About Us

BEROC is a leading research center on the Belarusian economy. We conduct academic and applied economic research, contribute to international research projects, and connect Belarusian scholars with the broader European and international academic community.

BEROC was founded with a mission to advance market-oriented economic reforms in Belarus through rigorous economic research, informed public dialogue, and international academic cooperation.

Today, we pursue this mission by producing and disseminating knowledge about the Belarusian economy and by fostering exchange between Belarusian and international researchers, scholars, and students.

This exchange works in both directions. We bring international academic standards, research practices, and knowledge into the Belarusian academic community. At the same time, our cooperation with researchers from leading international universities helps bring greater academic attention to Belarus and its economy and strengthens its presence in international research and policy discussions. BEROC researchers regularly publish their academic work in international peer-reviewed journals.

Since 2022, BEROC has operated from Lithuania following a forced relocation from Belarus amid a deteriorating political environment and increasing pressure on independent research and academic institutions.

Working outside Belarus has changed the way we operate, but not the focus of our work. We continue to conduct research, develop international academic cooperation, and contribute evidence-based analysis to discussions about Belarus’s economic development and future reforms.

Academic and applied research are at the core of BEROC’s work.

Alongside academic research, BEROC analyzes the current state of the Belarusian economy, its key challenges and structural trends, and develops policy recommendations for future economic reforms. We study possible pathways towards a more efficient, market-oriented economic model for an independent and democratic Belarus.

BEROC participates in international research projects and collaborates with researchers and academic institutions across Europe and beyond.

One example is the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM), an international research initiative through which we regularly study entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial attitudes in Belarus. Our international collaborations also extend beyond research focused specifically on Belarus and cover a broad range of economic questions, providing opportunities for academic exchange and professional development.

A flagship area of BEROC’s current work focuses on the economic prospects of Belarus’s future integration into the European Union. The project examines the economic reforms and transformations required for closer integration with the EU, their potential effects on the Belarusian economy throughout the transition process, and the opportunities that closer integration could create for Belarus.

BEROC was established in 2008 as a joint project of the Stockholm Institute of Transition Economics (SITE) and the Economics Education and Research Consortium (EERC), with financial support from the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) and the Eurasia Foundation / East Europe Foundation.

BEROC is a member of the FREE Network, which includes the Stockholm Institute of Transition Economics (SITE) in Stockholm, BICEPS in Riga, CenEA in Szczecin, and KSE in Kyiv.
