BEROC organized the open lecture of Maksym Obrizan (Associate Professor, Kyiv School of Economics) "Is there a transition gap in self-rated health of adolescents?" on March 26, 2019.

At the lecture Dr. Maksym Obrizan presented his research "Is there a transition gap in self-rated health of adolescents?".

ABSTRACT:

The finding that adult respondents from post-communist countries systematically report lower levels of self-rated health has been one of the most robust in transition economics. More recent evidence from 'Life in Transition III' survey shows that by 2016 the gap in adult self-rated health remains robust only in countries of the former Soviet Union and Mongolia. The possible gap in self-rated health of adolescents in transition has been explored much less. This paper fills in the gap by studying self-rated health of adolescents in transition and non-transition countries using four waves of the Health Behaviour in School-Aged Children (HBSC) study from 2002 until 2014. Preliminary analyses do not identify transition gap in self-rated health of adolescents as early as in 2001. However, adolescents in three out of ten included transition countries (Ukraine, Russia and Latvia) report considerably lower levels of self-rated health even in 2014. This observation represents a serious concern for health policy because unhealthy adolescents may potentially become unhealthy adults who will overutilize health services which in turn will lead to unnecessary health expenditures.
